QR code stopped working? Here is what to do
A QR code that worked yesterday now leads nowhere, shows an error, or displays a stranger's advertising? That is frustrating, especially once the code is printed and out in the world. The good news: in most cases the problem is not the code itself, but the service behind it. Once you understand why this happens, you can avoid it for good.
Why dynamic QR codes suddenly stop working
Many providers advertise a free QR code, then switch it off once a trial period ends. When the trial expires, the account is paused, or the subscription is not renewed, the code refuses to work. Instead of your destination, visitors see a payment prompt, an advertising page, or a plain error message.
The reason is simple. A dynamic code only stores a short redirect address in its pattern. That redirect runs through the provider's servers. If those servers drop the link or your access is suspended, the code no longer has a valid destination.
Static QR codes never expire
A static QR code works differently. The destination, such as a web address, text, or your contact details, is stored directly in the pattern. There is no server in between and no account that can lapse.
That is why a static code keeps working permanently and completely independently of any provider, including FairQR. With us you create static codes for free and without signing up, and they stay that way forever.
The honest bad news about codes already printed
If a dynamic code from another service is already printed and has stopped working, it usually cannot be redirected anymore. The redirect technically belongs to the original provider, not to you. Without an active, and usually paid, account with that exact service, you cannot set a new destination, no matter where the code is displayed.
How to get it right for your next print
For destinations that never change, a static code is enough, and you can generate one at FairQR for free. For destinations you may want to adjust later without reprinting, choose a dynamic FairQR code for a one-time price (Starter €29, Business €59, each incl. VAT). You pay once, keep control of the destination, and can export all your data at any time.
Before you send anything to the printer, use the trap checker to see where an existing code really points and whether a provider-dependent redirect is hiding behind it. That way you spot a subscription risk before the code ends up on paper.
