FairQR

Self-host your redirects

FairQR does not lock you in. This page explains honestly what the export can do, what it cannot do - and how to run it on your own hosting in about 15 minutes.

The honest framing first

  • Already-printed FairQR codes point at our domain. They keep working as long as FairQR runs - backed by our longevity promise with 12 months notice if the service ever winds down.
  • The export gives you the complete short-address -> target mapping at any time. Use it to run NEW prints under your own domain, or to migrate calmly in a sunset scenario.
  • Self-hosting trades away convenience: changing a destination then means re-uploading the file. That convenience (plus statistics) is exactly what you buy from FairQR - not your dependence.
  1. Step 1: Download the export (1 minute)

In the dashboard under "Export", download the file that fits: .htaccess for classic shared hosting (Apache - e.g. Hostinger, IONOS), nginx or Caddy snippets for your own server, CSV/JSON as a neutral backup.

  2. Step 2: Choose a domain or subfolder (2 minutes)

Your redirects need a fixed home, e.g. qr.your-domain.com or your-domain.com. Create the (sub)domain in your hosting panel if it does not exist yet.

  3. Step 3: Upload the file (5 minutes)

Shared hosting: upload the .htaccess into the web root of the (sub)domain (file manager or FTP). Own server: add the nginx map / Caddy snippet to your configuration and reload.

  4. Step 4: Test (2 minutes)

Open your-domain.com/q/YOURSHORTCODE in a browser. You should be redirected to the stored target. Spot-check two or three codes.

  5. Step 5: Use it for new prints (from now on)

Generate QR codes that point at your-domain.com/q/YOURSHORTCODE - for example with our free static generator. Those prints are then 100% yours.
