Static or dynamic QR code: the difference

Updated: July 2026

Whether a QR code should be static or dynamic comes down to a single question: can the destination change later? Both types look the same and are read by any camera app. The difference is what sits inside the pattern.

Static QR code

In a static code the destination, such as a web address, text, or your contact details, is stored directly in the pattern. There is no server in between and no account that can lapse. That is why a static code works permanently and independently of any provider. The trade-off: the destination cannot be changed once created, and scan statistics are not possible.

Static codes are ideal for destinations that are guaranteed to stay the same: WiFi access, contact details (business card), a SEPA bank transfer, or a fixed web address. At FairQR you create them for free and without signing up.

Dynamic QR code

A dynamic code stores a short redirect address instead of the destination itself. The printed pattern stays the same, but you can swap the actual destination at any time without reprinting. That is useful for menus, campaigns, posters, or addresses that may change later. Because the redirect runs through a server, many providers charge a subscription for it.

This is exactly where FairQR is different: dynamic codes cost a one-time price instead of a monthly fee, and the code stays active without an ongoing payment being able to switch it off.

Which type is right for you?

If the destination is guaranteed never to change, a static code is enough. If the destination should stay editable, or you want to see how often it is scanned, choose a dynamic code. If you are unsure whether an existing code runs through a service that can be switched off, the subscription-trap check helps.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference?
In a static code the destination is fixed in the pattern and cannot be changed. In a dynamic code the pattern holds a redirect whose destination you can change at any time, without reprinting the code.
Which QR code is better?
Neither is better in general, it depends on the purpose. For fixed destinations a static code is the simplest and permanently free choice. For destinations that may change, or if you want to analyse scans, a dynamic code makes sense.
Can I later turn a static code into a dynamic one?
No. Because a static code's destination is fixed in the pattern, you would have to create a new, dynamic code and reprint it. So decide in advance whether the destination should be able to change.
Does a dynamic code at FairQR require a subscription?
No. Dynamic codes come at a one-time price (Starter €29, Business €59, incl. VAT), with no monthly fee at all.
